  • New Procedure Allows for Quicker Recovery from Hysterectomy

A new procedure being performed at Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare is allowing surgeons to perform hysterectomies laproscopically, providing for shorter recovery times.

Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare is one of the first hospitals west of Lincoln to offer this procedure to its patients.

The lap hysterectomy procedure is made possible by a new piece of equipment recently acquired at MLMH, VCare®, manufactured by ConMed Corp.

Drs. Jill Fish and Todd Pankratz of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, P.C., in Hastings received specialized training in San Francisco on how to use the new equipment, allowing them to perform hysterectomies laproscopically, rather than abdominally through an incision.

“The main benefit for patients with this new procedure is to decrease the abdominal hysterecomy rate and allow for a quicker recovery and shorter hospital stay for patients,” Pankratz said.

“This procedure provides significantly quicker recovery time with less pain for patients,” Fish said. Previously, abdominal hysterectomies typically required a three-day stay in the hospital. With the new procedure, patients usually stay overnight and go home the next day. This benefits patients and insurance providers.

Information provided by ConMed also states that the new VCare® equipment allows for less blood loss and a shorter procedure time.

For more information on this new procedure, contact Dr. Pankratz or Dr. Fish at Obstetricians & Gynecologists, P.C., in the Hastings Medical Park at 402-463-6793.
