    Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare School of Radiologic Technology is a hospital-based program established to provide well-qualified radiographers. Upon successful completion of the 24-month program, the graduate is awarded a Associate of Applied Science Degree and is eligible to apply for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologies (ARRT) certification examination. The Radiologic Technology Program is approved for credit hours toward a Bachelor of Science Degree in Radiography from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health Technology at Hastings College and an Associate of Science Degree from Central Community College.

    The Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare School of Radiologic Technology was founded in 1953 by Dr. Warren E. Richard. The school is approved and accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, 20 N. Wacker Drive, Suite 2850, Chicago, IL 60606, (312)704-5300.

    Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare is a 183 bed, acute general care facility, designated as a trauma center for south central Nebraska.

    A student entering this program must have above-average intelligence, emotional stability, aptitude, personal integrity, and flexibility in adjustment to various situations.

  • Mission Statement and Goals

    Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare School of Radiologic Technology, is a hospital-based program established to equip students with the skills necessary to enter the field of radiography. The full-time 24-month program of didactic and competency-based clinical instruction is committed to provide education in both the theoretical and practical aspects of radiography utilizing state of the art technology. Graduates from the program demonstrate a high level of technical expertise while possessing the moral and ethical qualities consistent with the professional standards established by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

    The goals of the program are to produce:

    • Students that demonstrate the ability to competently perform entry level skills.
    • Students that demonstrate effective communication skills.
    • Students that demonstrate professionalism and personal responsibility.
    • Students that demonstrate effective problem solving and critical thinking skills.

     

    Applications and Prerequisites

    Applications are accepted between October 1st and January 15th each year. Appointments of qualified applicants are made regardless of race, color, creed, sex, national origin, age, marital status, or handicap. Enrollment is limited. Entrance testing and a personal interview are required. Additional requirements include ACT Scores, High School Transcripts, Physical Examination, Hepatitis B Vaccine and Letters of Reference.Candidates accepted to the program will begin in August.     Applicants must have at least 30 college credits and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Suggested elective courses in Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Information Systems may be beneficial.

    Application to the program is made by completing an application form, submitting a $25.00 application fee and mailing it to Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare School of Radiologic Technology.

    Cost

    Tuition for the program is payable upon admission. The tuition is comparable with programs throughout the state. For information on the tuition, refund policy, and financial aid, contact the Program Director.

    Students are responsible for their own housing, meals, books, uniforms, etc.

    Refund Policy:

    Full tuition refund will be made for the term if the student withdraws or discontinues the program within two weeks after the beginning of the academic term. No refund will be made for purchased books or supplies. Students who withdraw from the program during the tuition refund period may have to repay all or a portion of any outside financial aid they received. Students who receive Title IV funds will be subject to the Higher Education Reauthorization Act of 1998. Details are available through the University of Nebraska financial aid office.

    Students who withdraw from the program after two weeks in the academic term are not excluded from the payment of the tuition balance due.

    A hold will be placed on your student account until all financial obligations have been met. A hold on your student account will result in holds on your diploma and notification of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) regarding completion of the program.

    The Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare Accounting department is responsible for billing and collection of tuition. Bills are sent out twice yearly, in September and January. Students have sixty (60) days to make the payment. A late fee of $50.00 is added each month for any outstanding balance. Payment should be made in the form of check, money order or credit card. If a credit card is used, the student must make the payment in the Department of Education.

    Any tuition due upon voluntary or mandatory dismissal from the program will be payable to Mary Lanning HealthCare and a payment schedule will be established.

    Financial Aid

    All Financial Aid for the Mary Lanning School of Radiologic Technology is conducted through the University of Nebraska at Kearney. All students attending the Mary Lanning School of Radiologic Technology are co-enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. When completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the University at Kearney is indicated as the school of attendance. A budget reflecting the cost of attendance for the School of Radiologic Technology is used in aid determination.

    Admissions

    Admissions to the Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare School of Radiologic Technology are selective. Candidates chosen for the program, following the competitive application process, are required to complete an enrollment agreement and submit a one hundred fifty dollars ($150) deposit that will apply towards tuition.

    • If cancellation occurs within seventy-two (72) hours of enrollment, the one hundred fifty dollars paid shall be refunded.
    • If cancellation occurs after seventy-two (72) hours of enrollment, but before resident classes begin, there will be no refund of the one hundred fifty dollars ($150).
    Curriculum and Faculty

    The program consists of both classroom or didactic instruction and a competency-based clinical education.

    The student performs the various radiographic procedures in a clinical setting to develop the skills necessary to become a Registered Radiographer. In addition to performance in diagnostic and special radiographic procedures, the student will rotate in Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, and Computerized Tomography.

    During the 24-month program, the student will spend approximately 40 hours a week in classroom and clinical settings.

    Upon successful completion of the 24-month program, the graduate is awarded a Certificate of Graduation and is eligible to apply for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination. The Radiologic Technology Program is approved for sixty (60) credit hours toward advanced degrees from:

    Technical Standards

    During the performance of any typical employment situation, a Radiographer must be capable of certain common tasks. Some of these would include, but not be limited to:

    • read, write, and speak English to communicate effectively with patients and others in this area.
    • ransport patients via wheelchair, stretcher, and other modes throughout the Radiology Department and the hospital at large.
    • provide for every patient's comfort and safety while under the care of the Radiographer.
    • when needed, provide appropriate life support services.
    • assist patients with movements and perform patient positioning and manipulation necessary for radiographic projection and procedures,
    • transport, manipulate, and operate radiographic equipment, accessories, and ancillary instrumentation for patient imaging,
    • prepare and use procedural material including, but not limited to: sterile pharmaceutical trays, contrast media, instruments and linens, support and restraint devices, and other patient care items,
    • proces and/or transport radiographic film/imaging products, and patient and radiographic records,
    • evaluation and critique imaging products for technical accuracy and procedural determinations,
    • provide assistance for fluoroscopic and contrast media examinations
    • perform surgical and bedside radiography and operate related equipment and instrumentation,
    • manipulate and work with various radiographic units utilized by the educational radiography program,
    • perform and operate fundamental equipment testing, care, and maintenance,
    • receive and schedule patients, files, answer telephones, and assist and conduct office and clerical work, and
    • perform radiographic tasks during assigned hours whether during day, evening, or weekend.

    The following are physical disabilities that are suggested problem areas which may render it difficult or impossible to carry out the routine daily functions of a Radiographer 

    EXCLUSIVE DISABILITiES

    blind (i.e., no sight)
    limbless
    total absence of upper extremities
    confined to litter, stretcher, or similar conveyance
    deaf
    bilateral above the elbow amputee
    confined to a wheelchair

    MARGINAL DISABILITiES

    bilateral above the knee amputee
    lack of one entire upper extremity
    necessity for walking/ambulation assistance
    torso height at or below 36 inches above floor level
    dysfunction sufficient to significantly hinder dexterity and/or task performance

    COMPLIANCE WITH TECHNICAL STANDARDS

    An applicant or student who is considered, in the judgment of the program officials, to be unable to meet the technical standards of the program must provide the school with verification of compliance with these technical standards in order to be considered for admittance or continuance in Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare School of Radiologic Technology program.
