  • Diabetes education is an integral part of diabetes management. Diabetes education allows individuals with diabetes to learn about the components of diabetes management, including diet, exercise, medication and stress management.  The Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare Diabetes Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association for meeting national standards for quality self-management education.

    Diabetes Self-management Education

    Diabetes self-management education is an outpatient service offered as a course or an individual session based upon the needs of the participant.

    These educational programs are designed for:

    • Individuals wanting to know more about diabetes and diabetes management.
    • Individuals who have been recently diagnosed with diabetes, are starting a medication program or balancing diet, exercise, medication and lifestyle.
    • Individuals who have had diabetes for years and are interested in new information and/or improved control of their diabetes.

    Educational programs include:

    • Diabetes self-management course
    • Carb Counting Class
    • Pre-diabetes Class
    • Individual sessions. Individual sessions may include, but are not limited to:
    • Information on diet, exercise, medication/insulin, monitoring and complications
    • Pregnancy and gestational diabetes
    • Intensive diabetes management
    • Insulin pump therapy
    • Continuous glucose monitoring

    Community Education

    Community education provides ongoing education to people with diabetes and also serves to increase diabetes awareness.

    Community education includes:

    • Hastings Area Diabetes Education and Support Group
    • Diabetes Fair
    • Inspirado En El Bienestar targeting the minority population
    • Camp HotShots Central Nebraska for children ages 6-12 with diabetes
    • Presentations throughout the community on diabetes management
